Teaching Philosophy
My goal is to give students the tools to surpass any technical obstacles they face to be able to bring their ideas to artistic fruition. I provide students with fundamentals and concepts to prepare them not only for subsequent classes, but also for their careers. I strive to enable students to push through any intimidation and be able to feed their curiosity by discovering new information from a strong foundation of vocabulary, history, and savvy. I also present the evolution of the medium, as well as the contemporary use of a topic to build an understanding and validity. I aim to create a supportive environment that cultivates creation and provides a true and thorough understanding of graphic design and digital arts.
Comprehensive interactivity in class critiques is a crucial element I use to achieve learning objectives, because the experience nurtures critical thought and exercises vocabulary they are absorbing as well as elements that could make the piece stronger, incorporating critical thought, self-reflection, and articulation.
Diversity Statement
As a UC Santa Cruz alumnus, valuing diversity has been deeply instilled in me since my first core class in 1996. That educational awakening opened my heart and mind to the new experiences, cultures and worldviews around me. It led me to march aside Jesse Jackson in Sacramento to support Affirmative Action, and march with my daughters in San Luis Obispo to support women’s rights.
In 2020 I was the President of the Oceano Beach Community Association, where we brought awareness to Oceano’s primarily Hispanic community’s environmental injustice. I was also the OBCA’s Art Board Lead, and we increased beautification in our designated Opportunity Zone through artwork about Oceano’s incredibly culturally diverse and artistic history.
Throughout my fifteen years of teaching in California, Nevada, and Delaware, I have had the honor of instructing students of all ages, gender identities, socioeconomic status, etc., and embraced the experiences that each student contributed to the class. We all learn from each other and teach each other, and the more diversity in the class, the richer and deeper the lessons have been. Remembering how my undergrad experience influenced me, I will proudly uphold a commitment to excellence and equity as a faculty member and continue my personal mission to respectfully spread consciousness and cultural history.
Letters of Recommendation
These are letters of recommendation from incredible mentors.
I am pleased to be able to contribute my sincere and unreserved recommendation for Bekah Just; she
would be a great asset to any art program.
I have worked with Bekah for three years, in that time I have come to regard her as an invaluable
media and teaching collaborator, an absolutely reliable and extraordinarily responsive technical
support person, and a valued teaching colleague. Despite the myriad duties that she fulfills within the
department, teaching, mentoring, as well as acting in a formal computer lab support role through the
campus Computing Services unit, she has somehow maintained an extraordinarily rigorous artistic
practice and unwavering ethic of quality in all her artistic output.
She is the widely acknowledged department expert on all things pertaining to digital photography and
digital editing. Bekah is sought after by students and faculty alike for her advice and expertise in working
with a variety of digital media; she has been always generous with her time to all. She tackles even
the thorniest technical challenges with her characteristic receptive attitude, patience, high energy, and
engaging approach.
Bekah teaches both computer graphics classes for the graphic design concentration and digital photo
classes. She has an enthusiastic following among our students; her classes are consistently awarded that
coveted student aphorism: “hard, but good.” She has an excellent command of the material and
imparts it effectively, taking time to strategize her presentation to make it accessible and engaging,
particularly important in beginning classes which cover a great deal of technical ground in a short
time. I am impressed by the ethic she maintains in her students of a search for quality, engaging them
with insightful questions and suggestions of further artistic possibilities.
This dedicated artist and teacher has my enthusiastic and unreserved recommendation. If I can
provide any additional information that would contribute to your search, please do not hesitate to
contact me.
I am writing this letter in support of Rebekah Just who was a graduate student and is currently teaching here at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. What I have been impressed with from the beginning is Bekah’s commitment to art not just as a way of making pictures but as a way of life. Her images are a reflection of her experiences and her deep curiosity of life. Bekah has a keen sense of professionalism: her knowledge of art is broad and deep. She works in mixed media, traditional processes and digital. Her versatility is not casual experimentation but serious devotion to art making. It represents her attempts to find the right forms for her ideas.
Bekah has done such a fine job in teaching intro level courses that I have entrusted her with teaching both lower and upper division courses over the pass three years: New Media Portfolio, Advanced Digital Portfolio, Design Fundamentals III, Beginning Graphic Design, Beginning and Intermediate Black and White Photography, Digital Photography and Design Fundamentals III. In these classes we have a core curriculum but allow considerable freedom for course development. Bekah has evolved essentially new courses, which have been tremendously successful. About half of her students go on to study at the next level. This is the highest percentage of any graduate student we have here at UNLV and is, I think, a statement about how contagious her enthusiasm is and what an excellent job she does.
It is clear that I have a tremendous amount of respect for Bekah. She is a fine, intuitive artist with a very solid background. She is a committed artist who has the ability to share her knowledge and enthusiasm with students. And she has the kind of personality that makes it a pleasure to work with her; she inspires people around her. She is destined for great things. I would rank her in the top 2% of graduate students I have worked with in my eighteen years at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. I recommend Bekah Just to you highly and with out reservation.
It is with great passion that wholeheartedly I recommend Rebekah Just as a Full-Time Professor. I had the honor of managing her at Casey’s Cameras for three years, collaborating with her on several commercial photo shoots, and she is currently my colleague at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and at the College of Southern Nevada.
Rebekah taught Digital Photography and Intro to Graphic Design Fundamental, which are prerequisites for the Commercial Lighting course that I teach, and the students that had the opportunity to attend her classes are incredibly well prepared for my course and are the most advanced.
Rebekah has always demonstrated a high level of dedication and technical strength, constantly proving multi-disciplinary mastery and professionalism through her work. She selflessly and wholeheartedly assists peers, our students, and me when the opportunity presents itself.
Her passion for the arts and dedication to continuing and improving artistic expression in the Las Vegas community is contagious, proven through her successful participation in several First Friday exhibitions.
Rebekah’s tremendous ambition has influenced my career and will undoubtedly influence future colleagues and students.
I highly recommend Bekah Venturini for the position of Art and Design. I know her both personally and professionally. At the time I write this letter we are in the last phase of a large educational project: presenting an intensive course on the Affordable Care Act to attorneys in 10 different locations. Bekah has been instrumental in the success of this project. While I knew she had the skills and knowledge we needed, I cannot exaggerate how effective she is in groups and client relations. She more than holds her own in a roomful of lawyers and usually has the best ideas to boot.
On the issue of character, I am very impressed. She is organized, disciplined, thoughtful, and is able to leverage her superb “people skills” into creating a happy and productive work environment. She delivers on time, does what she says she will do, and never lets a client down. She has such enthusiasm for the Arts and teaching to bring to the classroom, she is liable to connect with the students. I would give her an “A” for judgment and common sense.
Obviously, she has great command of her subject and has an uncanny ability to explain how the digital/computer world works in real-time. It is hard to make “printed circuit design” an interesting visual experience, but she has done so. She has been producing 2 lovely technical magazines, Printed Circuit Design and Technology and Circuits Assembly for some years now.
In my teaching experience (all law-related) enthusiasm and a willingness to engage seem to be the difference between the average and the outstanding. She has that. Also important is practical experience – she will be able to not only cover the academics but relate each topic in the course to a real-world application. I have noticed that college students seem to be more practical, and career-oriented these days: they want to hear from someone who not only teaches but has been successful in the field. How will this help me do or get a job? Add her enthusiasm, personality, work ethic to her wealth of experience and you have a winning combination.
